Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda is one of the most iconic wildlife destinations on earth. The park protects the Rwandan sector of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of eight volcanoes straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was here that primatologist Dian Fossey conducted her legendary research on mountain gorillas, work that inspired the world to care about their survival. Today the park is home to ten habituated gorilla families, making it one of the most accessible places on earth for gorilla trekking. Golden monkey tracking, volcano hiking and visits to Dian Fossey’s tomb at the Karisoke Research Centre add further depth to any visit. The park sits at high altitude with cool misty mornings and forest trails that feel otherworldly. A gorilla permit in Volcanoes National Park is one of the most exclusive and memorable wildlife experiences available anywhere in Africa.
