Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah park and one of Africa’s great conservation success stories. Located in the eastern part of the country along the border with Tanzania, the park covers 1,122 square kilometres of savannah, woodland, swamp and a string of lakes fed by the Akagera River. After suffering significant poaching and encroachment in the 1990s, Akagera was revived through a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks, resulting in the successful reintroduction of lions in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, completing the Big Five. Today the park offers excellent game drives with elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, hippos and a growing lion and rhino population. Lake Ihema boat safaris provide close encounters with hippos and crocodiles alongside exceptional bird watching with over 500 species recorded. Akagera offers a completely different Rwanda experience from the gorilla parks of the northwest and pairs perfectly with Volcanoes on a comprehensive Rwanda itinerary.
