The Maasai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya is Africa’s most celebrated safari destination and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Covering 1,510 square kilometres of open grassland, riverine forest and rolling hills, the Mara forms the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem and together they support the largest terrestrial mammal migration on earth. Between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and hundreds of thousands of gazelles cross from Tanzania into Kenya in search of fresh pasture, braving crocodile filled river crossings that have made the Mara world famous. Outside migration season the reserve remains exceptional, with one of Africa’s highest densities of lions, leopards, cheetahs and elephants resident year round. The Maasai people, whose traditional lands surround the reserve, add a rich cultural dimension to any visit. A sunrise game drive across the Mara plains with hot air balloons drifting overhead is one of those travel experiences that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else on earth.
